The Launch of a Pseudonym

Two hardcover books on a writing desk at dusk: a starry sci-fi cover reading Jamie McFarlane beside a lamplit small-town cover reading Mac Worden

Ask any author who's been down this road whether a new pseudonym is worth the effort and you'll get an answer that goes something like this: great idea for finding a new audience, but it's a whole lot of work.

I write under two names, Mac Worden and Jamie McFarlane. Mac Worden is the new one. The impetus is simple. Science fiction, fantasy and urban fantasy have very little to do with action thrillers, mysteries, young adult mysteries and cozy crime. That's not too hard to agree with, right?

I've also been told that mystery and thriller readers don't always appreciate a sci-fi author stepping into their field. If that's true I'm in trouble, but I think most readers are more open-minded than that.

The biggest reason for the split, though, is how the big stores work. Amazon is fantastic at selling things, including books. It loves to categorize and recommend. The last thing I want is for every cozy mystery I write to carry a recommendation list full of spaceships. For me that's the compelling argument.

So now I begin the fairly large task of building an entirely new ecosystem for Mac Worden.

I'm looking forward to the challenge!

Happy reading, Mac Worden
